Network of eNoses contribute to quality of life in Port of Amsterdam

Lennart Verhoef News

Since last week, Comon Invent has installed 3 dozen eNoses in the Port of Amsterdam around the North Sea-canal, nearby oil terminals and other businesses that could possibly emit odours that lead to nuisance. This odour monitoring network is part of the project “GeurinZicht”.  This project is an initiative by the Port of Amsterdam in cooperation with EPA North Sea Canal Area and the Province of North-Holland. Safety Deal contributes to health and safety situation in South-West Holland

Lennart Verhoef News

In 2015, with funding by the Dutch Government, dozens of eNoses will be installed in and around the South-Holland South region. On behalf of several partners, the Environmental Protection Agency South-Holland South (OZHZ) submitted an application for funding, which was recently approved. OZHZ is a co-operation of 17 municipalities, region South-Holland South and the provincial government of South-Holland. Together they strive to create a safe, secure and sustainable environment.

The increased deployment of eNoses in the South-Holland South region creates a logical connection between existing eNose networks in the Rotterdam Rijnmond and North-Brabant area. This eNose network contributes to the safety and health of residents in South-West Holland. The early detection of the rise and spread of annoying, dangerous and unhealthy emissions in ambient air allows for quick intervention during incidents.

Mobile eNoses applied in RIVM investigation on odour nuisance incident Helmond

Lennart Verhoef News

GasTuesday evening May 6th, several residential homes in the Adonisstraat in Helmond were evacuated after residents reported a heavy fuel stench. A mobile laboratory of the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) investigated the nature and origin of the odour nuisance. RIVM applied Mobile eNoses of Comon Invent during the investigation. The Mobile eNoses register changes in the air composition that can lead to odour nuisance for the surrounding area. Mobile eNoses provide data that can be translated into detailed information about the rise and spread of odorous and non-odorous gas emissions. This contributes to swift and early detection of gases that may be harmful to the health and safety of the environment. At the time of the incident the mobile eNoses registered distinct peak values caused by the abnormal air composition that led to the odour nuisance. Several Mobile eNoses were positioned at various locations in the area where residents reported odour nuisance. With the use of the mobile eNoses the dispersion of the gas emission and impact area of the incident was mapped.
